Self-Talk Yourself to a Victorious You

5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defense; I shall not be moved. Psalms 62:5-6 KJV

Have you ever been in a situation where you had to sit with yourself and engage in some real self-talk? David did.

In Psalms 62:1, the Psalmist announces his unshakable faith in God, his rock and his salvation, his defense. David declares that his soul waits calmly upon Elohim.  However, in verse five, David is commanding his soul to “wait only upon God and to silently submit to Him”.

We live in a fallen world, and reside in a body, subjected to sin and death, a body that deteriorates daily. We therefore need God, who is our rock, our refuge, and our defense. We wait expectantly upon Him for our sustenance.

The Apostle Peter tells us that God has given to us everything we need for life and godliness – 2 Peter 1:3. However, as we strive to live this godly life, we are often bombarded on every side with the noise and demands of this fallen world. At times it becomes overwhelming. When this happens, amidst all the turmoil, we may need to stop, be still, and calmly engage in some self-talk. We may need to remind our individual souls that it is in God “we live and move and have our being…..We are His offspring” – Acts 17:28. He alone is our stronghold so we will not be easily shaken, because our God will never fail us. In Christ, we are overcomers.

We will therefore wait on Him, regardless of how long it takes.

Occasionally, we feel alone. We feel that there is no one to encourage us, nor one willing to fight with us. During those awful moments our defenses may be weakened, and the fiery darts of the wicked one penetrates our souls. Battered and broken we feel like giving up.

Don’t quit!

Instead, like David, let us encourage ourselves in the Lord- 1 Samuel 30:6, as we look to Him, “the Author and Finisher of our faith” -Hebrews 12:2. Our hope and expectations are in Christ alone. He will champion our cause. Be of good courage, you are never alone. Remind yourself of Psalm 27:10 (AMPC)  Although my father and my mother have forsaken me, yet the Lord will take me up [adopt me as His child].

The demands of this life are real, however, like the Psalmist we can remind our souls that God “alone is my safe place. His wraparound presence always protects me as my champion defender. There’s no risk of failure with God! So why would I let worry paralyze me, even when troubles multiply around me?” Ps 62:6 TPT

Prayer:  Thank You Father for Your promise never to leave us nor forsake us.  Father, in the midst of all the turmoil we know that You have our backs, and so we can wait patiently on You our refuge and our defense.  Amen
