In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. John 1:4-5
This scripture, taken by itself, is one of the most powerful of many powerful scriptures in the bible. It tells the story of the arrival of the Hope of the world.
It was a world that opposed God and His truth, ruled by the Prince of Darkness. Man groped around in his darkness, without hope, separated forever from God the Father. Man’s destiny was eternal damnation, eternal death.
Then entered Jesus.
In Him was life, and He was Life. He was the Bread of Life John 6:48.
Not only was there life in Jesus, but in Him was also the power to bestow life to a lost, dying world. This Life was the Light of humanity. Psalm 36:9 NLT tells us, “For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see”.
This Life brought light, the light that would lead man out of darkness and back into the arms of his loving Father. He was the Way, the Truth and the Life John 14:6. Jesus puts it in perspective in John 8:12:
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
The Light came into the darkness and it was stronger, more powerful than the darkness. The darkness was never receptive to the light. It could never understand it. Darkness tried repeatedly to put out the Light. Instead of being blotted out, “the Light shines on”. This Light was shining on during the time of the Apostles back in the book of Acts, and it continues to shine on today.
When Christ was crucified, it appeared that the Light was snuffed out. All of hell rejoiced, but their joy was short-lived. For Jesus was the Champion. Listen as Paul explains it Colossians 2:15:
In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross
The Light continues to shine through God’s elect. Matthew 5:14-15 stated, “You are the light of the world”. The Light continues to operate through you and me today. We are the ones Jesus place on the candlestick to give light to the whole house.
John 1:5 tells us that the light shines IN the darkness. The darkness is still there, for the wheat and the tares must grow together until the day of harvest Matthew 13:30. In Matthew 9:37, Jesus moved with compassion for the lost, stated that the harvest is great, but the laborers are few. The work we do in the kingdom is important. You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest. John 4:35 NLT
Are you one of God’s laborers? The field is white for harvest. We have work to do.
Try as it may, the darkness could not conquer or overcome the light, and darkness is still not able to do so. In bible days, the fire in the altar was to burn always in the temple, (Leviticus 6:12) even so today the Light of the World Jesus never ceases to shine. He has left us to carry on the work.
Jesus prayed in John 17:15: I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but that You keep them and protect them from the evil one.
Lord help us to let our light so shine before men, that they may see our good works and glorify You, our Father in heaven. We present ourselves to You our Father as laborers in Your vineyard. Amen
